When Hope Feels Broken: Finding Your Way After Pregnancy Loss
When Hope Feels Broken: Finding Your Way After Pregnancy Loss
By Jaclyn Iasnik, RN | Destination Conception
There are moments in life that divide everything into before and after.
For many families, pregnancy loss is one of those moments.
Whether your loss happened at five weeks or twenty weeks…whether it was after years of infertility, IVF, or a surprise positive test…the moment you hear that your pregnancy is no longer viable changes something inside you.
People often don’t know what to say.
“At least you know you can get pregnant.”
“Everything happens for a reason.”
“You’ll have another baby.”
While those words are usually well-intended, they can leave you feeling even more alone.
Because what you’re grieving wasn’t “just a pregnancy.”
You were grieving birthdays that would never come.
A nursery you had already imagined.
A name you had secretly picked.
The future you had already begun loving.
Your Grief Is Real
As a fertility nurse, I’ve walked beside countless individuals and couples through pregnancy loss.
I’ve watched excitement turn into heartbreak in a matter of minutes.
I’ve seen people blame themselves for something they never caused.
I’ve sat with patients who apologized for crying—as if they needed permission to mourn their own baby.
Please hear this:
You do not have to justify your grief.
Loss is loss.
Whether it happened naturally or through IVF, after your first positive test or after hearing a heartbeat, your emotions are valid.
There is no timeline for healing.
One of the Hardest Parts Nobody Talks About
The world keeps moving.
You may return to work while your body still feels pregnant.
Friends may announce pregnancies.
Baby showers continue.
Social media suddenly feels impossible to open.
Meanwhile, your heart is trying to understand something that makes no sense.
If you’ve felt angry…
Jealous…
Numb…
Guilty…
Hopeful one day and devastated the next…
You’re not doing grief wrong.
You’re simply grieving.
Did I Cause This?
This is one of the most common questions I hear.
The answer, in most cases, is no.
The majority of early miscarriages occur because of chromosomal abnormalities that develop completely outside of your control.
Exercise didn’t cause it.
Stress didn’t cause it.
Lifting groceries didn’t cause it.
One cup of coffee didn’t cause it.
Your body did not fail you.
Sometimes biology is simply heartbreaking.
When You’re Ready to Try Again
There is no “right” amount of time to wait emotionally.
Some people feel ready quickly.
Others need months—or longer.
Neither is wrong.
If you’re working with a fertility specialist, your physician may recommend additional testing depending on your history, including evaluating hormone levels, uterine anatomy, genetic factors, or other conditions that may influence future pregnancies.
As difficult as this season is, remember this:
One loss does not mean you will never become a parent.
Many families who experience pregnancy loss go on to have healthy pregnancies.
Your story is still being written.
Give Yourself Permission
You don’t have to be strong every day.
You don’t have to “move on.”
You don’t have to explain your grief to anyone.
Take the photos.
Celebrate your due date if it matters to you.
Light a candle.
Say your baby’s name.
Honor your journey in whatever way feels right.
Healing doesn’t mean forgetting.
Healing means learning to carry love and loss together.
From My Heart to Yours
If no one has told you this lately…
I’m so sorry for your loss.
I know this road feels incredibly lonely.
But you are not walking it by yourself.
There is still hope.
Hope doesn’t erase grief.
It walks beside it.
And when you’re ready, hope has a way of gently helping us take the next step.
One breath.
One day.
One heartbeat at a time.
