Is Your Sperm Showing Up for Work?

The tiny swimmers might be carrying more responsibility than you think.

Let’s get one thing straight: fertility isn’t just a “woman’s issue.”

In fact, male factor infertility contributes to nearly 40–50% of infertility cases. Yet somehow, sperm often gets a free pass while women are busy tracking ovulation, swallowing supplements, and becoming experts in hormone acronyms they never asked to learn.

So today, let’s give the guys a little attention.

After all…it only takes one sperm to fertilize an egg—but that one sperm still has to make the team.

🏊 Think of Sperm Like Olympic Athletes

If your sperm were trying out for the Olympics, they’d be judged on three main categories:

🏃 Speed (Motility)

Can they actually swim?

Because despite what cartoons have taught us, sperm don’t just magically drift toward the egg. They have to swim through a very long obstacle course.

Lazy swimmers?
Not ideal.

💪 Shape (Morphology)

Picture showing up to a marathon wearing ski boots.

That’s what poorly shaped sperm are up against.

A normal sperm has:

  • An oval head

  • A healthy midpiece

  • One long tail

Odd shapes don’t always prevent pregnancy, but they can make reaching or fertilizing the egg more difficult.

🎯 Numbers (Count)

More isn’t always better…

…but there does need to be enough players on the field.

A low sperm count doesn’t mean pregnancy is impossible—it simply means the odds may be lower each month.

🍔 So…What Hurts Sperm?

Unfortunately, sperm can be a little dramatic.

Here’s what they don’t appreciate:

  • Smoking

  • Excessive alcohol

  • Marijuana

  • Anabolic steroids or testosterone therapy

  • Obesity

  • Poor sleep

  • Chronic stress

  • Hot tubs (yes…really)

  • Laptops cooking directly on your lap

  • Tight underwear? The evidence is mixed, but keeping things cool certainly doesn’t hurt.

Think of sperm like avocados.

They prefer cool temperatures and a healthy environment.

🥦 Can You Improve Sperm?

Good news…

Unlike many things in life, sperm are constantly being made.

It takes about 70–90 days for a new batch to develop.

That means positive lifestyle changes today may show up in a semen analysis a few months from now.

Some habits that may help:

✅ Exercise regularly (without overdoing it)

✅ Eat more fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and lean protein

✅ Sleep 7–9 hours

✅ Manage stress

✅ Avoid smoking and recreational drugs

✅ Limit excessive alcohol

Your future swimmers will thank you.

💊 What About Supplements?

You’ve probably seen shelves full of “male fertility” vitamins.

Some ingredients that have been studied include:

  • CoQ10

  • Zinc

  • Selenium

  • Vitamin C

  • Vitamin E

  • L-Carnitine

  • Omega-3 fatty acids

The research is mixed, and supplements aren’t magic. They may help some men, especially if there’s a nutritional deficiency or increased oxidative stress, but they won’t fix every fertility issue.

🧪 The World’s Least Glamorous Cup

Nobody dreams about producing a semen sample in a tiny clinic room.

Yet a semen analysis is one of the easiest, least invasive, and most informative fertility tests available.

In a matter of days, it can provide valuable information about:

  • Count

  • Motility

  • Morphology

  • Volume

  • Concentration

Compared to everything women often endure during fertility testing…

It’s honestly a pretty good deal.

(Guys…you’ve got this.)

❤️ Remember: This Is a Team Sport

Fertility isn’t about pointing fingers.

It’s about gathering information.

Sometimes everything looks perfect and pregnancy still takes time.

Sometimes a small issue is found—and there are treatments available.

The important thing is not assuming the problem is only on one side.

The Bottom Line

If you’re trying to conceive, don’t spend six months wondering if everything is okay.

Ask questions.

Get evaluated.

Take care of your body.

And remember…

Even tiny swimmers deserve a training program.
